Costing Considerations

The main reason most call accounting systems do not calculate correct costs for calls is the lack of Answer Supervision - either because of the PBX and/or the call accounting system.  Apogee has the capability to automatically differentiate between trunks with and without answer supervision.

Answer supervision detection, extensive tariff rate options, and telco grade pricing mechanisms are just a few of the reasons SDT has been selected by RBOCs and International telcos to provide pricing engines for their proprietary systems.

Cost Allocation

This report is a great tool for apportioning charges amongst departments for corporate budgetary purposes.

Actual costs derived from telco invoices are used to adjust departmental basis costs and thereby force reconciliation.

Cost Markups

Dept Properties Apogee includes both Basic and Advanced markup methodologies.  The basic method allows various markup parameters to be applied on a departmental, cost center, division, or company wide basis.  Basic markups also can be applied to classes of account codes, or DNIS codes.  The advanced method allows differential pricing by individual extension, auth code, account code, DNIS code, PIC code, or trunk.

Cost Adjustments When any Apogee report is generated, the cost of each call can be adjusted on-the-fly.  The cost is simply adjusted by an arithmetic factor in the basic method.

In the advanced method, the cost is selected from various values derived at the time the call was stored.  These various stored costs would have been derived using alternative tariff parameters or separate billing methods based on extension, trunk, account code, auth code, PIC code, or DNIS code.

Call Type Summary

The most direct approach in the telecom cost control battle is to determine:
  1. What types of calls represent the largest proportion of the bill?
  2. What departments or users are making expensive calls?
  3. How to reduce the cost of these expensive calls.

In the sample Call Type Summary by Cost report shown here (click to view), note that a significant proportion of the total costs are due to international dialing.  Furthermore, the departments responsible for the lion's share of the international calls can be easily identified.  Further scrutiny of call details will usually expose the actual extensions or routes responsible for the misuse or malfunction.

User Summary

Users Once departmental call activity has been identified (see Call Type Summary), the User Summary report can be utilized to monitor individual users.  The graphical format quickly pinpoints those with greater than average activity.

As with most Apogee summary reports, double clicking on a specific user causes Crystal Reports to reveal call type subtotals and further drill down exposes individual call record detail (be sure to double click on the line outlined in red and drill down again on the subreport to access call details).
